I reckon...
- only the biggest "brands" of museum site (BM, Tate, etc) would come even close to having enough traffic to get any worthwhile ad revenue, and even then I doubt it'd be worth much using standard Ad Sense or whatever. It might work as part of a stand-alone adspace model (i.e.: get sponsor to buy a certain sized space for X per month) but still, I'd be dubious.
I'd guess online shop would be about the only thing that'd really turn a revenue worth looking at?
Other possibilities:
..correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone has ever showed a picture library making any money at all, especially if the salaries of all the people guarding rights and IP are taken into account…? Be interesting to hear if there are any scenarios where it can be made to work
…selling content: horribly, horribly hard to sell online only - but might be some examples of niche content that works
..selling skills or expertise? Curators as consultants…? Educational courses?
..membership?
My gut feel is that the main avenues are likely to be web as medium to sell something else "physical" rather than web on its own.
cheers
Mike
ps. I'd be ready to be shown to be wrong (and very interested to hear examples) from people doing this nowadays as opposed to 5 years ago when I was… :-)
