CERN - ODIN - Information Architect and Software Developer

ODIN is a two-year project currently under negotiations for financing by the European Commission, starting in September 2012. Partners of the ODIN project are innovators in science, information science and the publishing industry: CERN, the British Library, ORCID, DataCite, Dryad, arXiv and the Australian National Data Service. ODIN will build on the ORCID (orcid.org) and DataCite (datacite.org) initiatives to uniquely identify scientists and data sets and connect this information across multiple services and infrastructures for scholarly communication. It will address some of the critical open questions in the area:  Referencing a data object; Tracking of use and re-use; Links between a data object, subsets, articles, rights statements and every person involved in its life-cycle.

CERN participates in ODIN through the Scientific Information Service Open Access team and in partnership with sister infrastructure arXiv. We will develop a proof of concept to seamlessly connect information on small data sets published by the LHC experimental collaborations with information on the corresponding several thousand authors. Those connections will happen across multiple platforms, such as our flagship INSPIRE digital library (inspirehep.net), arXiv.org, and through the wider ORCID and DataCite infrastructures.

The successful candidate,  as part of a small and dynamic team, and with the support of a junior developer, will take responsibility to deliver CERN contribution and in particular for designing and implementing the workflows to connect relevant scientific artifacts and their corresponding authors within INSPIRE and with arXiv, and expose this information to allow further connections to be made by third parties through the ORCID and DataCite infrastructures.

In addition, the successful candidate will participate in the wider effort of ODIN contributing to: designing interoperability solutions for the ORCID and DataCite integration and analyzing the current landscape of infrastructures for identifiers in scholarly communications.

Eligibility Conditions
	• A BSc or above in Computer Science, or equivalent. Candidates with a BSc diploma should have no more than 4 years relevant experience. Candidates with an MSc or higher diploma should have no more than 10 years relevant experience (after the MSc).
	• A solid experience in developing in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python) stack, preferably in open source projects, using git or similar DVCS, and desirably in a production environment.
	• An understanding of representation of information through RDF/OWL, and experience in setting up, or working with, data stores exposing this information.
	• A sense of the challenges of integrating data in scholarly communication, beyond simple textual publications.
	• Familiarity with issues and standards in information systems are an asset: XML, XSLT, RSS, OAI-PMH, OAI-ORE
	• Experience with Linked Open Data, a digital library environment or persistent identifiers of digital object is an asset.

We offer an attractive remuneration under a CERN Fellow employment contract. with excellent social conditions including pension, private health insurance, family allowance.

Deadline for all documents to reach CERN is July 9th. Interviews will be held later in July by video conference and in some cases may also be held at CERN (travel costs will be covered). The projected starting date of the contract, subject to the successful conclusion of the negotiations with the European Commission, is 1 September 2012.
