Subject: Additional REF nominations

Dear Heads and Research Group Chairs

The Society has been contacted by HEFCE to seek nominations for an additional panel member on Sub-panel C17: Geography, Environmental Studies and Archaeology in the Research Excellence Framework (REF). This invitation follows a recent consideration by all sub-panels of their expertise for the assessment phase of the REF in 2014.

HEFCE are seeking further nominations of individuals whose expertise will enhance the potential of Sub-panel C17 to cover certain fields: these include social/cultural geography, environmental geography (in particular, social dimensions of environmental studies) and development geography. While this is a broad remit, it is hoped that some individuals may be nominated who have interests that integrate some of these areas, or cross boundaries between them.

It would also be helpful if nominations are made that, in HEFCE's own words, will 'promote equality and diversity through the REF, therefore we encourage you to nominate individuals that reflect the full diversity of the community'.

The purpose of this email is to ask for nominations by 15 June please. At this stage I need the name of the nominee(s), full address/affiliation, areas of expertise, and reasons for nominating. You can submit multiple nominations.These nominations will be considered by a sub-group of the RGS-IBG Research Committee and representatives of the Council of Heads of Geography Departments. I should stress though that we do expect to submit a significant number of nominations to allow HEFCE/the sub-panel to make a selection most appropriate to enhance the existing balance of expertise.

You will recall that the principles used in our previous nominations were:

• Nominees should have sound judgement and, given the relatively small size of the sub-panel, to have knowledge across substantial areas of the discipline and to be open to quality work across a broad field.

• Individuals should be nationally and internationally recognised and respected for their research expertise

• Nominees should have the wider support of the community

Attention was also given to:

• Regional spread of departments represented

•         Different types of institutions;

• Departments with a range of RAE scores

•         The need for some continuity between successive RAE’s (at least 1/3 but no more than 2/3 of the REF sub-panel must come from RAE2008);

•         The diversity of those on the sub-panel;

• Inclusion of those with understanding of impact and work with public, policy, business and/or community sectors.

It was also agreed that only one member of a department would be nominated and/or supported by the Society/Council of Heads. FYI the geographers on the panel, with their university affiliations, are listed below.
