Hi Ian,
I hope the list will forgive me for posting here instead of/as well as calling at your extremely nearby desk... but on the off-chance that others are interested:
Not hard figures as such, but http://thatsnotonline.tumblr.com/ is a fascinating source for all things not (yet?) digital. One post in particular that jumps out in this context is on once controversial/banned children's and young adult books, none of which can be found in digital format (but many of which would now - hopefully - be found in a good school library: http://thatsnotonline.tumblr.com/post/19464360056/controversial-childrens-and-ya-literature-part-one
And it may be swimming against the tide, but the Society of Authors is running a new campaign calling for legislation to make it a statutory requirement for every primary and secondary school in England and Wales to have a library: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/jun/27/authors-library-every-school-legislation

Subject: School Libraries
A teacher friend of mine texts that her head teacher is claiming the School Library is no longer necessary because everything's available free gratis and for nothing on line; yes, that old chestnut.
I've referred her to the Cilip School Library website, and I can go through all the standard arguments with her, but does anyone, off the top of their heads, know of a source of figures to show that a lot of things published in book form are original and not just scattered around the Web? We're all sure it’s true, of course, but it’s rather difficult to quantify.
Thanks.
