Data and Information Management Staff Required
The MRC Epidemiology Unit was set up in October 2003 to study the genetic and environmental determinants of obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders. For further information about the Unit please visit www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk.
We are looking to recruit a full-time permanent data and information management staff member who has particular strengths in database development and data handling, to work in a data management team supporting the work of the Unit. The post holders can expect to be involved in a wide range of computational issues and will be a strong team player with excellent communication skills at all levels. They will be responsible for providing software development and wider expert advice on the management and processing of data, contributing towards the Unit's work flows and information and statistical structures.

Data Manager - Databases - Permanent position - Band 5
Reporting to and managed by the Senior Data Manager (SDM), the post holder will work in conjunction and in consultation with the SDM and will contribute to the day to day database development and management for studies being run by the Unit and with databases supporting the wider Unit's work. They will support members of the Unit in the development and management of these databases, both pre-existing and new and in the provision of study data to meet research needs. They will ensure appropriate security and access controls on all data are maintained in accordance with the Unit's requirements and current legal, security and ethical rules. Additionally, they will provide assistance and guidance to staff at all levels across the Unit (from Programme Leaders to students) in the application and development of databases. Whilst the focus will be on databases and their development and management, the post holder will be expected to understand and contribute regularly to the general data management activities carried out by the data management team.
Work will involve data from all of the Units' programmes of research, and an initial emphasis will be on providing expertise to ensure legacy databases remain operational and to develop these further. The post holder will be expected to work closely with investigating scientists and other data management staff to link scientific processes to unit data, software tools and databases.
The post requires a BSc (or equivalent) qualification in a science, computation or mathematics based subject, ideally with some related subject experience in software development, large volume data handling and/or database development.
The starting salary for this Band 5 position will be in the range of £20,074 - £27,271 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward scheme and optional final salary pension scheme. Working hours will be 36 per week. This post will require an enhanced CRB check.
