Thomas Harriot Lecture 2012
This year’s Thomas Harriot Lecture will be given by Dr Lesley B Cormack, Professor of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta, at 5 pm on Thursday 31 May 2012 in the Champneys Room in Oriel College. Dr Cormack’s title will be:
‘The whole earth, a present for a Prince’: Molyneux’s English globes and the creation of a global vision in Harriot’s time
The lecture will be followed at 6pm by a drinks reception to which all those attending the lecture are invited. After the lecture, it will also be possible to visit an exhibition of books related to 16th-century navigation and map-making in the college’s Senior Library. The subject of Dr Cormack’s lecture is relevant to the exhibition that will be taking place at the same time in the Museum of the History of Science. This exhibition, “The Renaissance in Astronomy: books, globes and instruments of the 16th century”, is a joint venture of the Museum and the Royal Astronomical Society.
