Thanks everyone for nice remarks about the Today interview this morning.
You'll all realise of course that both Lucy (Robinson) and I said much much
more during the original interview when Alan Little came down to Sussex,
and Claire (Langhamer) was there too so I hope her words will appear and
also Rachel (Hurdley) in future planned Today coverage of MO in its 75th
year.
I am afraid my turning the tables on Alan Little at the end of the prog was
desperation. I was worn out. He kept wanting me to agree to this notion
that the monarchy was "democratised" and I really couldn't accept that term
since we all know just how much what democracy we have has been in peril -
the Murdoch debacle being just one example and let's not start on the
banking oligarchy.
In any case nothing in the MO replies gives evidence of a 'democratised
monarchy' and that was all I was supposed to be speaking about. What would
that mean anyway? That we all had a share in Buck Pal? That we could be
queen for a day? that we elect our monarch? What the MO stuff shows is
exactly what Lucy said - people use these events differently for their own
purposes, emotional, social, ideological, political, nationalistic or just
an excuse for a party and a day off work (if you are lucky enough to still
have work). That's not to underestimate the current popularity of the Queen
or to be disrepectful of those who feel strongly about royalty in either
direction.
