Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Road Freight
Tuesday 12 June, 0930 – 1200
Attlee Suite, Portcullis House
Two-thirds of the UK’s domestic freight is transported by road in heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), which together account for 17% of the UK’s domestic transport greenhouse gas emissions. The government’s 2011 “Carbon Plan” suggests that to meet the long-term target of the Climate Change Act (2008) – to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 – emissions from domestic transport will need to be substantially reduced.
The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology is organising a seminar to discuss the opportunities and challenges for reducing the carbon footprint of road freight. Options for discussion include fuel efficient driving behaviour, logistics management, vehicle efficiency improvements and switching to lower carbon fuels. The event is intended to give Parliamentarians and their staff the opportunity to discuss the issues with leading experts in the field.
