(An open letter to self-styled nutrition expert David Gillespie (Sweet
Poison) and the alarmist brigade)
.
It came to my attention today that a colleague of mine, nutrition
scientist Dr. Joanna McMillan, was being attacked in various online forums
(Facebook, blogs, etc) by rabid nutrition zealots. In short, the zealots
decided in their infinite wisdom that she was a sell-out to the food
industry and that sugar alone makes us fat. Both assertions are wrong on
so many fronts that I almost dont even know where to begin. The hypocrisy
of it all was nauseating and it was obvious they did not know her on a
personal or professional level or they would not have been under the spell
of such misguided beliefs.

The following is my response on the Facebook pages
.
It is very sad that I had to come across this thread and see misinformed
comments impugning the professional integrity and scientific training of
Dr. Joanna McMillan. Before I go on, I should preface my comments by
saying that I also hold a PhD with a research focus in the areas of morbid
obesity and type 2 diabetes, plus advanced qualifications in exercise
physiology and human nutrition. I find these comments to be egregiously
myopic and alarmist and they do not consider the broader scope of
nutrition and how it fits into a healthy lifestyle.
.
The tired and outdated notion that sugar makes us fat just refuses to die,
thanks to sensationalist media all vying for the almighty advertising
dollar.

.
Ive come across a number of personal and professional attacks on Dr.
Joanna McMillan in different forums (Paleo websites etc) and found it all
to be complete rubbish. The fact that she is a properly qualified
nutrition scientist (with an earned PhD by research and not some online
certificate) and formulates her views from the evidence-based medical
literature should be celebrated, not dismissed as a case of another one
sells out. So what if someone sprinkles a little bit of sugar on their
cereal. Any responsible nutrition professional with legitimate
qualifications knows that all foods can fit into a healthy diet (yes, even
table sugar). But provided youre not piling it on by the shovel-load then
its not realistic to assume that this alone will make you fat.
.
Anastasia, you state on your Facebook page (Primalmeded): According to
Wikipedia, an apple has an average of 5.9g of fructose. As a medical
student, why would you need to refer to Wikipedia (that bastion of
editorial integrity) for your facts? Irrespective of how much fructose an
apple has or what its glycaemic index might be, in the larger context of a
well-balanced diet, what does it really matter? Humans do not (or should
not) live on a single food item no matter how healthy it is. I find it
interesting that all the nutrition zealots claim that medical doctors have
little to no training in nutrition yet the minute a medical doctor (or one
in training) writes a book or blip on nutrition, the public gobbles it up
like it was the gospel hand-delivered by God himself. Sorry, cant have it
both ways.
.
@David Gillespie, youve written a book with what, in my humble opinion, I
consider to be an alarmist title (Sweet Poison: Why Sugar Makes Us Fat).
Yet on your website your qualifications are listed as a recovering
corporate lawyer, co-founder of a successful software company and
consultant to the IT industry. Please explain to everyone how this
qualifies you as a nutrition expert?
.
I should also state that I have NO financial connection to Goodness
Superfoods, so Im not defending them, but why are you so down on a food
company making a buck? By the looks of things, youre no innocent boyscout
trying to save the world for free. Is it not true that you are peddling
your sugar poison book with the intention of making a profit? How dare you
make money off the public for espousing your nutrition views! <Sigh.>
