Closing date for applications - Monday 21st May 2012
Applications are invited for the following PhD studentship:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asking about outcomes: conceptualising, identifying and measuring outcomes of family group conferences.
This studentship is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The project is a collaboration between the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships, at The University of Edinburgh, and CHILDREN 1st (one of Scotland’s leading child welfare charities). The successful applicant will be registered as a postgraduate student within the School of Social & Political Science, The University of Edinburgh.
Family Group Conferences (FGCs) are strongly advocated by child welfare professionals, as providing an empowering, child-centred and family-based process of decision-making to support children. While their evidence base has accumulated on process, they lack a sound outcomes evidence base. What outcome evaluations have been done are narrower than FGCs’ aims, and of current government objectives for children and children’s services. This studentship’s research will examine how to conceptualise, identify and measure outcomes for children and their families, of FGCs. It will capitalise on CHILDREN 1ST involvement in FGCs, giving unique access and potential for service and policy impact.
The studentship can be offered on either a 1+3 (MSc in Childhood Studies plus PhD) or +3 (PhD only) basis. It can be full or part-time. This studentship may be particularly attractive for someone interested in part-time study or a 1+3 model.
You should have, or expect to gain, an upper second or first class honours degree in a relevant social science discipline. Candidates with a substantial research component in their undergraduate degrees, with prior research experience, or who are undertaking or have completed an ESRC recognised research training Masters course will be at an advantage.
You must also meet the ESRC requirements for residential eligibility. Interviews will be held on Wednesday 14th June 2012, in Edinburgh, and the University year commences in September 2012.
Please apply with a CV, the names of two referees, and a statement of application which makes clear why you are interested in the project, and what skills, attributes and understanding you are likely to bring to it. Applications must arrive by Monday 21st May 2012 at 5 p.m.
