Dear Emma

How would you like to sort out the expenses for the meeting last week
(my train travel came to 62)? Would you like me to submit a claim,
and if so, can you send me a copy of the appropriate form, or would
you like me to wait until after the July event and submit a single
claim then?

Regarding the July event, have you thought on how you would like to
recompense me for that? There are clearly two ways - one at a rate
similar to the BSS panel daily honorarium, the other at my consultancy
rate for a day. I am easy regarding the method. Given that this is a
trial, and that I am a BSS panel member, maybe it would be best to
simply give me the BSS daily rate. This would probably also be
appropriate if you wanted to do a second trial (following lessons
learned from the first event), or indeed, a trial of a more advanced
course. IF you wanted my services in the future when the course is
up-and-running properly, then it might be appropriate to switch to
another rate (my rates vary, depending on various factors , from
400-900 per day; for BBSRC for a purpose in which I believe I would
charge only 400), though if it might be perceived that there might be
some sort of conflict of interest, it might be best to retain the
daily rate for any event during the period in which I remain a BSS
panel member.

Beyond the trial, what are your thoughts on rolling out the course?
One route would be to have an open tender (and you'd get the usual
lags used to running communication courses); the other would be
largely to do this in-house. That is for you to decide, though i think
that - given you and Patrick are largely designing the materials, and
would be running the first event - it would be good for you to keep
that expertise in-house if you could (I guess that would depend upon
how frequently you wanted to do the course, and the constraints on
your times). Keeping it in-house would also enable you to maintain a
BBSRC slant and be reactive to current issues and trends, possibly
being directed by the BSS panel, and enabling 'guest' experts to take
part as-and-when.

Have a good weekend. Blimey - the sun is out!

Gene
