KONG'S DESPAIR
To be at the wrong end of a false dichotomy
sucks
things
sculpted in scarcity
lost in profusion.
Walking upright
I read evolution as unravelling.
But in the black-and-white
version he was 25 feet tall
-- his strength increasing
by a tenth of his weight --
thus in a (real) word he could walk as well
as a gorilla under an SUV.
At poster size (50 feet) his thighs
would be as strong as biscuit.
Betty bought a butterfly.
A dozen got off the train
and went for the beach with trays of cans.
They called the girls horrible names.
Karl spoke up
and when he'd knocked his second attacker out
six got him to the ground
lunging for his jugular.
Eddie jumped across
and got his back cut to ribbons.
Conor held his hand out
to lose his tendons.
No one died.
The papers went broad-brush.
Eddie's tattoo is fucked.
Beauty -- present everywhere we look
though you love us not
our way
I would that something
more fruitful than rods or mercy
turn its key.
