Just want to run a scenario past you all to see what you would do next.
Man with a 9 year old and 13 year old in a role that is double days but had agreed with opposite number that they would do perm earlies and the other perm lates had a episode of strange behavior at work approx 3 months ago. Manager brought to OH. Man was in an acutely anxious state and wife advised to come and then seen at A & E as past GP open hours. Diagnosed with acute anxiety.
Good manager keen to help so after regular weekly contact by OH man comes in for joint meeting to try and understand what work can do to support. Man had some external anxieties mainly surrounding not seeing family as always working 2-10pm and was referred to counselor at work. He also identified he felt isolated at work as worked alone away from rest of his department and in a noisy booth requiring PPE.
He was then phased both in days and hours back into work over a 6 weeks period but not his normal role and hours as he was on medication so into his department. His opposite number ( who has known mental health issues) then came and said they had same concerns and also felt the work was distributed unevenly as most came in in the morning. Consultation with supervisor, manager and both individuals then took place and the following was decided the best and fairest.
Role to go back to what it should be as rotating earlies lates to deal with distribution of work, introduction of 3 period in with rest of department per shift, a handover period of half hour and late shift to finish at 9pm not 10pm so as both local they still arrive home at reasonable hour.
Counselor has advised OH that he struggles with change but feels the changes we are making are positive. However since RTW plan ended has had further episodes of anxiety and been signed off for a week returned 2 weeks and this week signed off again. OH spoke to man and he says he feels the work changes are good but have now created issues for child care when he is on earlies.
Valued employee but as opposite number also has health issues and raised same issues manager not sure what else to do as many employees have to find ways to manage child care.
Seems work is not the issue but childcare management and OH has given advice and support on this to man.
