Hi,
In my experience in rural East Anglia ;0)
Shooting (rifles) tend to see reduction in non-shooting dominant side as the action of supporting and raising a rifle by the shoulder can partially 'close off' and the hand by the cheek can shield the ear canal somewhat - I can usually predict if they are a left or right handed shooter - they are amazed every time, sadly I'm not :0(
More recently, I have seen a lot of one-sided NIHL in the East European population that shoot, many Brits seem to have got the message regarding wearing of hearing protection which is positive but doesn't seem to be so common elsewhere.
I have seen one-sided NIHL in people who have worked for many years with one ear 'facing' a noisy machine or engine or the side on which they manually use a hammer in metalworkers or HGV wheel/tyre removers (sledgehammer on metal).
Also, I am still surprised by the total noise dose some individuals expose themselves to over the day at work and at home and I'd also add a word of caution here, some of the posts refer to Ipods but any kind of music player and music exposure whether through the radio at work, the MP3 player/their phone, the sub-woofer in the boot of their car or the stereo on loud at home all counts, clubbing, playing musical instruments/hobbies - plus noise from machines at work!
Kind Regards,
Catherine
