I am not sure that there would be anything to be gained in this. I would not
want to be registered with an "appendage" of the GMC. It certainly would not
be a more financially attractive option.
Dental Hygienists, for example, are registered with the General Dental
Council but to my knowledge cannot practice independently of a dentist.
Would Nurses really want to find themselves in this position? It could be a
case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
A more likely outcome could be that the NMC becomes defunct and nurses
register with the Health Professions Council jus as other allied health
professionals now do.
