Hiya,
I'd go for ATW referral - possibilities that'll help the kind of work this employee does:
-Dragon - voice recognition
-Read-write gold - text prediction software (with or without Dragon)
-Mind-mapping (free versions available) but training is really key to save time as software links of office applications
-Scanning of documents - text to speech
-Change settings on PC - change default font within documents and for software menus, make default font bigger, more spread out (so more white space between letters), change background colours (there are all trial and error and dependent on the individuals preferences)
-Coloured plastic covers - my friend who is a nurse and has to read other people's hand-written notes swears by these.

ATW can be fabulous but the process needs to be closely managed but it is only as good as the technical assessor and the questions he or she asks. If you are able to provide the employee with information to include in with her application a positive result from ATW is more likely - be confident in your recommendations but be specific about the type of help you are looking for e.g. .... Consideration of Joe Bloggs for funding for a technical assessment for specialist software to assist in dictating notes (both directly into PC or into a Dictaphone if off-site or at a client meeting), text prediction software and mindmapping.
Success of the above depends on the quality of the training provided for the software. For the above packages you are looking at 3 half days for Dragon, half day for RRG, half day for dictaphone and half day for Mindmapping software. Hence why it is important to try ATW.
I highly recommend Ros at 1st Voice Solutions. There are other providers but I haven't used them for clients with Dyslexia.
Maybe you need to convince her management team that this is an investment in their employee....... it would have cost them a fortune to recruit her and develop her - no point losing her off-sick with stress or from the profession! She does have to commit to using whatever is provided and practice with it.
Kind Regards,
Catherine

Subject: dyslexia
Hi all,
I have a young social worker who is dyslexic, main difficulty is spelling and organisation. Of late under a lot of pressure and constantly trying to 'catch-up' with backlog. Apart from voice activated software in office, can anyone recommend anything else that may help her work more efficiently, e.g. during note taking at client's place. Also, apart from Access to Work, any other avenues ? Any particular company where best to get software/hardware?
All advice appreciated and thanks in advance.
Rgds

hi lean
i know this is a very nurse led tool kit however there are good problem solving solutions if they had a psychologist assessment it will advise in the report what would help i have enclosed the RCN pdf and links that will hopefully help - the employee may need adjustments - if they have issues with note taking why so? would they benefit from yellow paper to note take with lines as this is helpful instead of black on white
good luck - i have interest in dyslexia as my daughter and husband have this - both are on the artistic arena - my husband is an architect and finds notes, meetings that are organised and time to organise his workload is the biggest help
best wishes
