The Townsends were active in Yorkshire as well.
Chauncy Townsend leased the Apedale Mines in Wensleydale in 1759. He had
extensive mining interests in Wales as well as a copper smelter in Swansea.
Chauncy, his son James, his son-in-law John Smith and grandson Henry Hare
Townsend worked the Apedale mines for the next 50 years or so.
Can't help on his Welsh mines much.

Dear colleagues
David E. Bick's "The Old Metal Mines of Mid-Wales: Part Four--West
Montgomeryshire" p. 8 mentions that the mine at Rhoswydol (or Rhoswydel) was
operated in the 1780s by a "Townsend & Co."
Can any one tell me about about "Townsend & Co." or about the history of
18th century mining at Rhoswydol?
I am primarily interested in the mining ventures of Chauncy
Townsend/Townshend, but he died in 1770, so it seems unlikely that he was involved with
this mine in the 1780s.
