Applications are invited for a PhD research bursary in any aspect of the study of gender and news at De Montfort University’s School of Media and Communication (see http://www.dmu.ac.uk/about-dmu/schools-and-departments/school-of-media-and-communication/index.aspx). Possible topics might include examining representations of men or women in the news (national, local, or international); the role of gender in the production of news; a feminist political economic analysis of the news; gendered news consumption patterns; new media transformations and its relationship with gender; or the gendered nature of news. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Kaitlynn Mendes, Senior Lecturer in Journalism, and other members of the School of Media and Communication, and will be expected to teach 6 hours per week on various theoretical courses in journalism studies.

Applications are invited from UK, EU, or international students with a good first degree (First, 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant subject. A £5,000pa bursary is available for up to three years full-time study starting October 2012.

MeCCSA is the subject association for the field of media, communication and cultural studies in UK Higher Education. Membership is open to all who teach and research these subjects in HE institutions, via either institutional or individual membership. The field includes film and TV production, journalism, radio, photography, creative writing, publishing, interactive media and the web; and it includes higher education for media practice as well as for media studies.
