Nick,
Responding to the first area, we have worked with both the Polar Museum and
Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge on the "ViziPlay" project to connect school
children with digital heritage collections.
Details as follows:
Title: ViziPlay
Description:
Pupils are encouraged to explore a digital collection using Deep Visuals
proprietary "ViziQuest" semantic browsing system. Having immersed
themselves in the collection, they are challenged to select 10 objects from
the collection to use as props to tell a story around. The system then
produces hardcopy printouts of images of the selected objects as part of a
"workbook" with spaces for the students to create their story. The system
was specifically designed with links to aspects of narrative building at key
stage 2 of the National Curriculum. This has been successfully trialled
with 30 pupils from a local school. The pupils learnt a lot, both in terms
of narrative building but also about the content of the collection. The
creativity displayed was also amazing !

Subject: Request for examples of current projects
Dear MCG,
As part of the follow-up to the Europeana Awareness event in Brussels last
night, we are working on a report highlighting examples of current
innovative projects using tech and/or media in UK museums, archives and
libraries.
Although we have a lot of examples, there are a couple of areas in which we
are struggling to find current museum examples, and I am hoping that you can
help us out!
We are looking for projects in the following areas:
* Projects in which museums have worked with local communities
to build digital literacy - either directly, through workshops or seminars,
or more generally as an outcome of a digital, learning or community project
* Projects in which museums have generated a sustainable new
income stream either from their digital content, the development of a new
application or establishing a new business model
If you are involved in a project along these lines, we would really love to
know! All we need is the name of the project, a short paragraph describing
it and ideally a link from which people can find out further information.
I am really hoping that the lack of current examples isn't indicative that
there's nothing to report in these areas!
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
All best,
Nick
