We have been putting a maximum of 4 students with one reader and one invigilator and this seems to work quite well as very little reading is required.

We would love to do that but the problem we had this morning with GCSE English is that we had 17 students who needed readers, we haven't got 17 individual rooms, plus struggling to get 17 readers all at the same time, nightmare, we have the same problem when it is functional skills.

Hi Karen
We have done that before as well, only to be told that students did not want to disturb the reader. So we ditched that. Now everyone has a reader even for an occasional word.

I am of the understanding that you can have one reader to 3 students (page 11 2.5.9 of the pink book - only to be used for occasional words or phrases), plus the invigilator, we have done this for GCSE English this morning, it seemed to work okay, in most cases students ended up not using the reader as they could only read section 'B' of the paper, so they didn't see the point.

Hello all
7.3 Reader/Computer reader
The centre is responsible for ensuring that if a candidate and reader are not accommodated separately, other candidates cannot overhear what the reader is saying and are not disturbed by their presence. If the candidate and reader are accommodated separately, a separate invigilator will be required.
If several candidates require only occasional reading assistance, they may be accommodated as a separate group with a reader and an invigilator.
With regard to the above paragraph from the JCQ ICE document, has anyone ever interpreted this as needing a minimum of 3 people in a room, whether that may include a reader / invigilator and two candidates, one of whom was being read to?
We are running very short of invigilators and considering this as a possible option.
Kind regards,
Steve Bustard
