I think the solution to this in our environment is that although we were
setting the shell variable http_proxy in the tcsh shell our users run by
default, this does not get passed on to the sh shell that the analysis
startup script invokes. The solution is to set http_proxy environment
variable instead, so on our CentOS 5 machines we have as an example:
# cat /etc/profile.d/http_proxy.csh
setenv http_proxy http://wwwcache.gla.ac.uk:8080
