Cornish beam engines in South Australian mines – 2nd edition
Cornish beam engines in South Australian mines was first published in 1993 in response
to the interest in South Australia’s mining heritage created by the state’s Jubilee 150 in
1986. A key element of this interest was the state’s surviving Cornish enginehouses, in
particular those at Burra and Moonta where significant conservation and interpretive
programs were undertaken. In 2006 the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape
was designated a World Heritage Site, a key factor being the role that the Cornish beam
engine played in the industrial revolution. This book is now of international significance as
it demonstrates the transfer of Cornish steam engine technology to South
Australian mines in the second half of the nineteenth century.
The newly released 2nd edition includes a section on the Cornish Mining World Heritage
Site and the concept of a transnational serial listing of other Cornish mining landscapes
across the world. This transnational listing would include the Australian Cornish Mining
Heritage Site which consists of the Burra and Moonta Mines State Heritage Areas. New
plans have also been added following further research and conservation work at several
sites.
