Alberto Rex González "In Memoriam"

Dr. Alberto Rex González, was born on 16 November 1918, in Pergamino,
province of Buenos Aires in Argentina, physician, anthropologist
philosopher, archaeologist and human rights defender, passed away on last
28 March. Director of the Museo Etnográfico of the University of Buenos
Aires and of the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de La Plata.
His passion on nature begun in his Pergamino observing paleeonthologist
pieces during his early years. Reading Florentino Ameghino and Darwin
works changed his mind to evolutionism. Being doctor decided to study
archaeology, he obtained his doctorate in the Columbia University and
begun to think that Argentine archaeology had to change from the
etnohystory to scientific history, and "without chronology there is not
history" he said. In this way, in the 50´s, he created the Carbon 14
laboratory with the nobel prize Bernardo Houssey from CONICET helping at
the Museum of Natural Sciences of La Plata, Professor at several
Universities, participant as researcher in expeditions all over the world,
author of more than one hundred books, UNESCO consultant, winner of
prizes, and honoris Causa doctoral, father, grand father and grand grand
father.

Researcher at the Museo of La Plata during the 70´s when he was fired by
the military dictatorship accused of "science subversive supported" he
talk back that "science is always asking, it is against fundamentalism".
He demonstrated notable interest in archaeometallurgy and initiate the
cooperative work with metallurgist, physicist and chemist people in this
field. He was the first one that studied the North West archaeometallurgy,
giving high relevance to the scientific analysis of objects. During the
50´s affirmed that the bronze in this region was similar to other Andes
Places. He has singular passion on bronze plates and in 1992 wrote a book
"Las placas metálicas de los Andes del Sur" During his last years was
still interested in the North West metal objects emphasising that the
metallurgical activities gave an important place in the dynamics of
prehispanic societies.

His brain was an itinerant library. Once he was asked: "Is it truth that
if you were born again you would be an archaeologist?" "Of course", he
answered.

((Es verdad que, si volviera a nacer, volvería a ser arqueólogo? (Sin
lugar a dudas.

His books:
(Arte, estructura y arqueología(
(Arte precolombino de la argentina(
(Tiestos dispersos y Arte precolombino: Cultura Aguada

During his last days he pronounced the words: "el asombro mueve a las
ciencias", remembering his hours in excavation field labours.

We will miss him.
