Dear Chris,
Are you planning to attend the IASSIST conference in Washington DC in June? I'll be presenting a paper there describing our work in the UK on a JISC-funded project called Data Management Planning for Secure Services (DMP-SS). (see: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ich/research-ich/mrc-cech/data/projects/dmp_ss ) One aspect of this work has been the extension of a set of Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) v3.x tools to accommodate the generic requirements of Data Management Planning (i.e. not just UK-specific DMPs). Aside from my own talk at IASSIST there will also be some relevant discussion on the DDI toolset that has been developed by a company called Metadata Technology (using the OpenMetadata Framework ).
Please see Session-α Research Data Management: assessment and planning: http://www.iassist2012.org/indexfolder/program/index.php
It looks as if a colleague of yours, Eleanor Read, will also be presenting at the same session!
The DDI standard emerged from the international Social Science community and its early manifestation was designed to address the post hoc representation of survey metadata for data archival services. The latest version (v3.x) has been completely redesigned to allow for a life-cycle approach to survey management. One of the benefits of DDI 33.x (or life-cycle) is that its creators have sought to include and extend core concepts from existing metadata standards (like Dublin Core and ISO11179) while also building on a legacy of over 10 years of community engagement. The result is an active community of users with a wide variety of software tools and services. We were particularly keen on extending DDI life-cycle to represent DMPs so that we could build upon this pre-existing collection of users and resources.
I hope you can make it along to DC and please feel free to contact me directly if you’d like to follow up on this.
Kind regards,
Tito

Subject: Metadata Workshops?
This question was posed on the LinkedIn Digital Curation Group, but no one has responded. I thought I'd send it out to the listservs and see if it gets any bites.
> Does anyone know of a workshop for academic metadata librarians on
> helping researchers create metadata strategies for data management plans?
> I find navigating all the subject specific metadata standards a little
> daunting. I've also gotten several questions from social science
> researchers who have no discipline-specific metadata standards.
Sincerely,
Chris Eaker
