Title: Properties of Lyman-alpha nebulae at high redshift.
Spatially extended Lyman-alpha (Lya) nebulae like giant Lya blobs (LABs)
raise many questions about their origin. Several mechanisms for powering
their emission are proposed but the resonant nature of the Lya line
affects computations and measurements; moreover, catalogues are
certainly biased. Consequently, an unbiased catalogue of LAB is required
to get a better understanding of the nature and properties of these
sources, to compare observational results with theoretical models, to
identify their relationships with distant galaxies, to test their
association with dense regions, to examine their contribution to the
star formation rate and to the reionisation of the Universe.
The goal of this thesis is to provide such information on Lya nebulae
using forthcoming data from MUSE@VLT from which one of the best
world-wide sample of LABs is forecasted. Their detection requires to
cope with their faint surface brightness, their variable sizes and
shapes. Hence, the first part of the thesis will be devoted to finalize
and test algorithms for detecting such objects in astronomical
hyperspectral images, taking benefit of recent results we obtained in
segmenting the data field from sparse representations and multiscale
approaches. The validation and performance assessment will be performed
on simulated data and on astronomical images from MUSE. The second part
will concern the analysis of the catalogue with respect to the
astrophysical issues mentioned above.
