Doping in sport: the evidence for performance enhancement
Dr Yannis Pitsiladis
Yannis Pitsiladis is a Reader in Exercise Physiology at the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences in the College of Medicine, Veterinary & Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow and founding member of the International Centre for East African Running Science (ICEARS) set up to investigate the determinants of the phenomenal success of east African distance runners in international athletics. ICEARS has created and maintains the largest known DNA biobank from world-class athletes.
There is limited evidence for "worthwhile" performance enhancement (doping) in sport. There is evidence of doping in sport and there is evidence that anti-doping agencies are getting better at catching the cheats. However, it is apparent that there is still a need for more evidence-based performance enhancement research, a need for "new generation" testing and the need for legal alternatives. These are just some of the issues Yannis will cover in the 2012 Bishop Le Fanu Lecture.
