Hi Kevin,
There's only one issue in town, really, and that's geo engineering.
There's no way the political process is going to be
able to deliver the necessary emissions reduction and carbon capture
in the time-scale required to prevent the runaway
climate change process from taking off. To put it illogically and
starkly we've already breached the 'magic' 2 degree C
safety barrier. (The IPCC will be proved to have got the figure wrong:
0.5 degree C would have been nearer the mark.)
Anyone who has taken this on board and is now advocating adaptation is
being morally irresponsible: analogous to selling
snake-oil to somebody suffering from cancer. The very substantial
proportion of the human race who have hardly thought
about where the fault lies for the pending global catastrophe can
hardly be condemned for what seems to be an intrinsic
behaviour pattern. We're semi-social animals and the 'herd instinct'
seems to work well for survival rather than not.
If the current tools half-heartedly employed by our political masters
are doomed to failure, the sooner they are persuaded that
a form of 'deus ex machina' solution has to be implemented the better
the chances of civilisation surviving.
Okay, the 'moral hazard issue' hangs over this potential escape route
but it seems to me that, this being the case, the sooner homo
sapiens, (that's the sapiens half) thrashes out once and for all its
stand on the 'moral hazard issue' the sooner we'll have a firm take on
the future of our species. Either it will be all over by the end of
the century or we'll be given another chance to demonstrate we really do
deserve the label 'sapiens'.
