The MA Childhood and Youth Studies (MACYS) in the School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sussex, is recruiting for full-time and part-time study routes starting in September 2012.
The MA offers advanced study of the subject of childhood and youth. The course is distinctive for being both interdisciplinary and inter-professional and, as such, brings a range of contrasting disciplinary and professional perspectives to bear on the lives of children and young people, and the policies and practices that affect them.
The programme is convened by Professor Rachel Thomson who is the Principle Investigator of the longitudinal ESRC funded projects Inventing Adulthoods and Making Modern Mothers. The MA is one of two flagship programmes of the new Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth at the University of Sussex to be launched this summer http://www.sussex.ac.uk/esw/childhoodandyouth/research
Core modules on the MA are taught by staff in the Departments of Social Work, Education and Psychology who have expertise in childhood studies. Guest lecturers with expertise in policy and practice with children and young people also teach on the programme. Students have the opportunity to follow specialized modules in international education, child development, and the anthropology of childhood, as well as research methods for researching with children and young people.
The programme will be of interest to those with a 2:1 or above in any undergraduate degree in the human and social sciences, arts and humanities. The programme attracts an international student group representing a range of professional experience including youth work, international development, residential care, social work, law, psychology, and business and management.
