AAA 2012 Panel CFP: Crossing “generational” and disciplinary boundaries.
“Early-” and “Late-Forming” Families and Care-Giving Binds.
The “right” age for having children and “generation” are cultural
constructs that people sometimes violate, forming families “too early” or
“too late.” Our group is studying the rise in “late-forming” families in
Spain: families of first-time parents “considered biologically and socially
older, with a greater generational difference between parents and children
than is conventionally accepted, that is 35-40 years” (Hernández
Corrochano). We want to learn about research on family formation that
crosses generational boundaries, in either direction, or finds these
boundaries very significant/unimportant. As the idea of “generation” is
often tied to exchanges, especially care-giving, crossing this boundary has
important effects. We are also interested in finding ways to deal with
crossing disciplinary boundaries. We consult specialists from psychology,
demography, medicine, etc., but want them to play two roles. First, as
experts who study the same phenomena we do. Second, as informants, people
who work within and construct sociocultural interpretations. How can
anthropologists deal with this? • How do different groups construct the
concepts of the “right time” to form a family and “generation”? • How do
people push/cross “generational” boundaries in family formation? Are they
criticized for this? • Is the concept “generation” always relevant? • How
do “intergenerational” care-giving and family formation interact? • How do
we cross disciplinary boundaries without either simply accepting everything
our expert colleagues tell us or only accepting their views as informants?
How can we collaborate without ONLY listening to them as informants?
The final date for receiving proposals
is April 14. Proposals will be answered very quickly, as the participant
would need to register for the conference by April 15
