I am becoming animal.
I eat. I sleep. And, in between,
I patrol my territory, nervously;
or just sit, partially unaware,
watching only the external;
abstract elaborated thought
not readily available.
I do not have fur; am not caught
by passions of physical natures;
but the soul has partly left me
living alone.
When I’m walking,
I lack purposes. I hunt little,
and defend nothing. I greet
my enemies, as they all are,
or those disinclined to friendship.
It is difficult to understand
each other, and our world at large.
Is there another? I think not.
We are clearly of God’s measure
because we are like our maker.
It concerns me to be of beasts.
