The Center for Photochemical Sciences Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, USA offers a Graduate Student Position

A Graduate Student position involving ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic studies of photochemistry and photoinduced dynamics of small polyatomic molecules in the liquid-phase is available immediately in the laboratory of Alexander N. Tarnovsky at BGSU.

The objective is to trace the electronic and vibrational reorganization, following the excited state evolution, including the characterization of conical intersections, and to develop an entry point for quantum control of femtosecond processes in solution.
In our research, we use state-of-the-art experimental methods of ultrafast laser spectroscopy, primarily the deep-UV-through-near-IR pump/probe method with 40 fs time resolution (1 fs = 10-15 s). Other techniques include laser pump/x-ray absorption probe and femtosecond stimulated Raman.

The computational characterization of conical intersections is handled though intradepartmental collaboration (Prof. Massimo Olivucci).

Requirements:
- bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related major from an accredited college or university Preference will be given to candidates with solid background in physical chemistry/chemical physics. Experience in reaction dynamics and/or laser spectroscopy is a plus. For further information about the PhD program at BGSU, see
http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/photochem/phd_program/overview_phd.html

The application should include cover letter, CV, and list of courses taken in physical/theoretical/chemistry. Please arrange for two letters of recommendation to follow up your application.

For further information, see http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/photochem/people/atarnov.html and contact Dr. Alexander Tarnovsky: [log in to unmask]

Sincerely yours,
Alexander Tarnovsky
