Hi Tony
How portable does it need to be, and what are the requirements in terms of quality? I'm not sure if the scans you are after are just for visual reference and perhaps simple sharing online, or whether you are looking for a better quality 'digitisation'? In fact when I first read your email I'd assumed you were looking at truly portable devices and had been using something as simple and cheep as a battery powered FlipPal (http://flip-pal.com/).
Away from the 'day job' I have worked on the Who Do You Think You Are Live show at Olympia and when people have bought in their family photographs something I tried was the totally portable, sheet-fed, double-sided Visioneer Strobe 400 (http://www.visioneer.com/products/item.asp?PN=90-0536-00U). The sheet feed won't be to everyone's liking for sure (depending on the nature and value of the material), but it does a good job and I still use it here at home for scanning things like postcards and carte de visite photographs, where often the backs are as important as the fronts! What's also nice about it is that you can power it from a second usb port rather than requiring mains power. This still very much falls into the category of visual reference online sharing quality though.

Subject: Travelling scanner
Hello all,
Just in case someone brings along a photo, we take a scanner around with us
when we are doing events across the county. We bought a bog standard scanner
last time and, surprise surprise, it did not last long. Can anyone suggest a
good quality and robust digitisation "solution" that does not mind being
moved around?
Best wishes,
Tony Pilmer
