Just been re-reading Erving Goffman's "Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity". I had not realised how inaccurate and generally backward it all is, yet it still lies on the academic bookshelfs and was the main text for William Bromwich's paper "The handcycle corpus" in 'Discourse, Identities and Roles in Specialized Communication' published in 2010. Goffman's "Stigma" should have to carry a health warning.
