Dear List members
We currently have an issue that has arisen due to the fact that we have photographic images in slide format which we need to copy into digital form. Previously we attempted to scan these using the attachment for our A4 flatbed scanner, however, the resulting digital scans were unsatisfactory as the images produced were slightly cropped. This was due to the fact that in order to prevent the cropping we would have needed to remove the slides from their frames, but our equipment was not sufficient to enable us to undertake this properly (a test resulted in a skewed image) and we were also worried about potential damage to the slides themselves.
We are interested in hearing from anyone who has faced similar issues and can offer us advice on what action we should now take to undertake the slide digitisation in the best means possible. We want to ensure the protection of the original material and the integrity of the copies we produce in digital format, which will be added to our local history collections in due course. We would prefer to undertake the work in-house if possible (and are willing to obtain higher quality scanning equipment to achieve this, if economical). Can slides be digitised successfully in their frames with the right equipment or should we expect to have to remove the frames to obtain a complete image?
Any advice would be gratefully received, please send any responses to us off-list.
Kind regards
Natasha
