Call for Expressions of Interest: Guest Editor – 2013 IDEA Journal
(March 2012)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/call-for-expressions-of-interest-guest-editor-2013-idea-journal-march-2012/>

FEBRUARY 29, 2012

Launched in 1999, the IDEA JOURNAL is an international refereed journal
dedicated to the publication of interior design/interior architecture
research and as such provides a valuable resource to the discipline and
associated design and theoretical fields.

The IDEA JOURNAL is central to IDEA*s objective to foster, publish and
disseminate peer reviewed interior design/interior architecture research.
The journal recognises and promotes interior design/interior architecture
as a research activity relevant to its field where the definition of
research includes research about design, research for design as well as
research through design. To this end, the IDEA JOURNAL invites a range of
contributions related to interior design/interior architecture research.

The role of Guest Editor is supported by:

   - the Executive Editor
   - the IDEA Editorial Advisory Committee who provides critical advice
regarding research agendas for the journal and oversees the double blind
   refereeing process and the final selection of papers and contributions;
   - the External Advisory Committee who provide advice and feedback;
   - the Electronic Publications Editor.

The Fifth International Conference on Concept Mapping follows on the
success of the first four Conferences held Pamplona, San José,
Tallinn/Helsinki and Viña del Mar in bringing together scholars and
practitioners interested in concept mapping. It is being organized by the
University of Malta and the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, USA.

The Conference is aimed at all persons interested in the use of concept
maps (based on the work of Dr. Joseph Novak), including, but not limited
to: facilitation of learning; eliciting, capturing, archiving, and using
“expert” knowledge; planning instruction; assessment of “deep”
understandings; research planning; collaborative  knowledge modeling;
creation of “knowledge portfolios”; and administrative and strategic
planning and monitoring. We expect participants from a broad range of
fields presenting a wide variety of research and applications of concept
mapping. All presentations at the conference are expected to include time
for questions, answers, and scholarly discussion.

Research on Embedded Systems or Pervasive Computing (PerCom) and its
associated sensory and mobile technologies, is shifting focus from studies
in controlled research laboratories, to emerging prototype implementations
in real world everyday applications. The future application of PerCom is
envisaged to cover almost all public, personal and commercial aspects of
our lives. The benefits of PerCom are numerous and wide ranging, providing
unprecedented applications on a previously unseen scale. However, this
large scale use of technology brings with it a series of potential
implications for its users.

DIS’12 Workshop: Re-conceptualizing Fashion in Sustainable HCI (June 2012,
Newcastle UK)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/dis12-workshop-re-conceptualizing-fashion-in-sustainable-hci-june-2012-newcastle-uk/>

Location: Newcastle, UK
Website: http://dis12fashion.wordpress.com/
Deadline for workshop submissions: March 16, 2012

We don’t ordinarily think of fashion as a positive force for
sustainable practices in the design of products and services. One imagines
that fashion drives consumption and premature obsolescence at the expense
of efficient use of resources. However, fashion exists in various aspects
of our lives. A breadth of cultural and sociological research has shown
that fashion plays an essential role in influencing consumer behavior and
culture. Also, fashion-oriented design encourages ingenuity, imagination
and innovation, which are crucial elements in pushing forward technological
and social progress. In this workshop, we intend to explore the question of
whether it is possible to re-conceptualize fashion in a way that helps us
understand how to design to make sustainable practices natural and
fashionable.

Participants in the workshop will collaborate in a practical exercise to
act as a stimulus for thought concerning how the notion of fashion affects
people’s behaviors and attitudes toward digital consumption. Participants
will also share a reflection about their own personal experience of fashion
as it relates to sustainability.

connecting people, ideas and practice’ (AH/J5001413/1).

The symposium is an opportunity for us to share our findings but is also an
opportunity to engage with other academics and practitioners doing research
on the creative economy or on creative practice and using complexity
methods. We would welcome paper proposals from academic and practitioners’
discussing their investigations and experiences of using complexity theory
in their research on the creative economy or in their creative practice and
the potential methodological challenges involved.

DIS 2012 Workshop: Slow Technology: Critical Reflection and Future
Directions (June 12, 2012, Newcastle, UK)
Date: 12 June 2012
Location: Newcastle on Tyne, UK
Website: http://www.willodom.com/slowtechnology/
Deadline for workshop submissions: March 20, 2012

In their seminal article on Slow Technology, Hallnäs and Redström (2001)
argue that the increasing availability of technology in environments
outside of the workplace requires interaction design practice to be
expanded from creating tools to make people’s lives more efficient to
“creating technology that surrounds us and therefore is part of our
activities for long periods of time.” These authors outline a design agenda
aimed at inverting values of efficient performance and emphasizing creating
technologies that support moments of reflection, mental rest, slowness and
solitude. Over a decade later, these issues remain areas of inquiry in the
HCI and design communities, and there has recently been a resurgence of
work in this area. The core goal of this one-day workshop is to critically
reflect on the work that has emerged since Slow Technology was originally
proposed to forge understanding of the challenges, limitations and
opportunities characterizing the contemporary design space.

Deadline for submissions: 16 March 2012

In this workshop we aim to explore the growing fascination
with participation across design, art, social science and the sciences in
recent years. We find ourselves in a situation where the boundaries
between participatory tools and methods from specific disciplines are
becoming blurred. Researchers and practitioners must now negotiate
the appropriateness of methods and tools given the different epistemologies
and practices across various disciplines. There comes a temptation to
develop or use new methods and processes without necessarily understanding
those that have been used before. There is often little reflection on why
we might want to involve people in design and artistic practices,
nor understand the motivations of those who do participate and what they
take from the process. At the same time, project and funding commitments
may mean participation becomes an end in itself as opposed to a means
for improving research processes and products.

FEBRUARY 2, 2012

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Dates: 11-12 June 2012
Website: http://di.ncl.ac.uk/designwellbeing/
Deadline for submissions: 16 March 2012

This two-day workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary group of
researchers, designers and practitioners who are currently working on
wellbeing in the field of interaction design or health care, or are
interested in the topic.

Wellbeing is defined as positive mental health, it is not only the absence
of mental illness but the presence of positive psychological functioning.
The workshop aims to establish a foundational agenda for interaction design
research around this concept of wellbeing. It will provide a platform to
share experiences and resources, create new ideas for design and build
valuable future collaborations. The workshop will further include
activities that allow for the experience of different aspects of wellbeing.
Moreover, workshop attendees will be invited to collaboratively create
design concepts that have the potential to support peoples’ wellbeing and
will develop first prototypes using Gadgeteer.

Deadline for workshop submissions: March 16, 2012

DIYbio (Do It Yourself Biology) <http://diybio.org/> is a growing community
of biologists, artists, engineers and hobbyists who pursue biology projects
outside of professional laboratories. (DIY)bio projects range from
gardening and experiments with food, to creating biosensors, genetically
modifying organisms or building biology equipment from off the shelf parts.
As these developments continue to expand science practice beyond
professional settings and into hackspaces, art studios and private homes,
human computer interaction (HCI) research is presented with a host of new
opportunities and concerns.

Our one-day DIS’12 <http://dis2012.org/> workshop will bring together a
diverse group of designers and HCI researchers, as well as biologists,
bioartists, and members of the DIYbio community to critically re-envision
the role HCI might play at the intersection of biology, computation and
DIY. We will engage directly with DIYbio initiatives to explore the
materials, practices and challenges of garage biology. Drawing on
presentations from participants who work with organic materials, hands-on
biology activities (such as extracting DNA), and structured discussions, we
hope to address themes such as: opportunities and implications for
integrating organic materials into interactive systems; technologies that
support and hinder public engagement with science; and HCI’s role in the
public discourse around bioethics and biosafety.
