Course Outline: There is an increasing use of filters and faceted navigation in web site and enterprise search applications. However often the categorisation offered to users does not help them find the information they are seeking. This course will provide an introduction to the basic principles of search usability and then focus in detail on how to develop a faceted navigation scheme which is highly intuitive and so makes a significant difference to search effectiveness and search satisfaction
Who should attend: Intranet and web managers who already have implemented search, or who are planning a search implementation, and IT developers with responsibility for search interface design.
Course Presenter: The course will be presented by Tony Russell-Rose, Director of UXLabs, a UX research and design consultancy specialising in complex search and information access applications. He was Manager of User Experience at Endeca and editor of the Endeca UI Design Pattern Library, an online resource dedicated to best practice in the design of search and discovery experiences. Prior to this he was technical lead at Reuters, specialising in advanced user interfaces for information access and search. information retrieval. Tony holds a PhD in human-computer interaction, an MSc in cognitive psychology and a first degree in engineering, majoring in human factors. He holds the position of Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, London.
