“(Dis)Unity in Italy”
“Pur troppo s’č fatta l’Italia, ma non si fanno gli Italiani.”
—Massimo d’Azeglio
The editorial board of UCLA’s annually published journal, CARTE
ITALIANE, would like to announce its forthcoming September 2012
edition, Volume 8, which will be published in conjunction with the
Italian Graduate Student Conference being held on January 27-28th
2012: “(Dis)Unity in Italy.”
In the spirit of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy,
this volume of Carte Italiane seeks to put the concept of a unified
Italy in dialogue with the sociocultural, literary, geographic and
political realities of the country.
But is Italy really unified? Over the past 150 years the
conceptualization and practical implementation of unity has been
consistently problematized, producing vigorous debate at all levels of
Italian society. Yet Italy, historically a locus of immense cultural
production, prevails despite ever-present turmoil: issues of fractured
politics, linguistic inconsistency, social discrepancies have always
been present.
This volume will explore the ways in which Italy has been conceptually
and practically (dis)unifying since the fall of the Roman Empire. What
were the cultural and political parameters of the Risorgimento and its
consequences? What ideas of Italy existed in the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance? How do they inform the actual development of the nation?
Despite the 1861 unification, how have Italians opposed and resisted
it? Has the d'Azeglio dream been fulfilled: have Italians been
“created”? We seek papers that directly address these and other
concerns in the Italian intellectual tradition from the medieval era
to today.
Papers from all disciplines are welcome, including Italian literature,
Film and Media Studies, Comparative Literature, Art History, Music,
History, Architecture, Musicology, Geography, Political Science,
Sociology, Environmental Studies, Women's studies, Transnational
Studies, Translation Studies, Migration Studies etc.
Possible topics may address:
The Risorgimento and its intellectual reception and practical repercussions
The Renaissance and its influence on the idea of a (dis)unified Italy
The effect of immigrants on the idea of “Italianness”
The inclusion and exclusion of the female voice within the
discourse of political and social (dis)unity
Popular expressions of (dis)unity in Italy
Political debates, current political climate in Italy
Visual/architectural/filmic/musical representations of (dis)unity
Ideas of Italy in the Resistance, the Reconstruction, and the
contemporary era.
The idea of Italy in migrant imagination and memory.
Italy’s linguistic (dis)unity.
Television/radio as a (dis)unifying factor over the past 100
years. (linguistically, culturally)
