Cheers Jon
I agree that Simon's request was central to the list's purpose and spirit
and that the negative message(s) complelty inappropriate

In the rubric "WHAT IS CRITICAL GEOGRAPHY FORUM?" which Ian hasn't read, it
says "Critical Geography Forum is an international discussion group..... to
allow
members to share ideas, raise questions, provide answers and air
opinions.... which seeks to promote:
a) the development and dissemination of critical and radical
perspectives in geography and related disciplines;
b) critical and radical research, publication and educational
activities undertaken by geographers;
c) links between academic geographers and radical political
activists and activities;"
This is plainly exactly what Simon is doing and the whys and the wherefores
of his funding are irrelevant; plus, isn't sending this request part of
'doing it himself?' I think Ian owes Simon an apology...
It may well be that the stellar 'names' in geography who lurk on this list
have chosen to turn it into little more than a boring queue of CFPs and a
forum for opportunistic self-advertisement, but even a cursory reading of
the founding document shows that this is a shameful betrayal of its original
purpose, whereas what Simon has asked is explicitly on-topic..
