*CIG e-forum on social media in the cataloguing community*

*March 28-29, 2012 *

*Hosted by Esther Arens, Céline Carty, Nicola Osborne & Wendy Taylor*

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It's free and open to everyone!

Registration information is at the end of the message.

On both days, sessions begin at 10am and end at 5pm.

This CIG e-forum follows on from the 5th annual CIGS Metadata & Web 2.0 seminar, which took place on Friday March 2nd 2012 http://bit.ly/CIGS2012
Do you use Facebook, Twitter, blogs or other social media as part of the cataloguing work of your institution? Are you looking to move on to Google+, FourSquare or Pinterest? Or do you use social media for your own professional development and networking? This CIG e-forum will look at who uses social media, why, what they get out of it and will seek to share tips on how to start out in social media for those trying it for the first time. We hope this e-forum will be useful to those new to the world of tweeting, blogging and hashtags as well as providing an opportunity for the more experienced to exchange best practices and new ideas.

Guest moderator: Nicola Osborne @suchprettyeyes
We are delighted to have as our guest moderator for this e-forum Nicola Osborne, who was a speaker and live-blogger at the CIG Metadata & Web 2.0 seminar. Nicola is Social Media Officer for EDINA, a JISC National Data Centre based at the University of Edinburgh which delivers online services and innovative projects for higher and further education. Nicola advises and supports projects, services, and colleagues throughout EDINA and the wider community on social media on both a practical and strategic level, she also authored EDINA's and contributed to the University of Edinburgh's Social Media Guidelines. Prior to this role Nicola worked on the SUNCAT project manipulating catalogue records and building her expertise in social media. She is the author of several book chapters, articles and frequent presentations on social media and is currently part of the host organising committee for Open Repositories 2012.

Co-moderators
This e-forum is co-moderating by 3 CIG committee members with an interest in social media. After many years as a cataloguer, Esther Arens has recently been appointed Assistant Systems Librarian at the David Wilson Library of the University of Leicester. In her professional development, Twitter has played a particularly important part - which she herself finds most surprising because she normally keeps online engagement at a rather low level.
Céline Carty works in English Cataloguing at Cambridge University Library. She blogs and tweets both personally and as part of her work on the High Visibility Cataloguing initiative. She has been known to wax lyrical about the value of social media for cataloguers.
Wendy Taylor is Bibliographic Services Librarian for the RNIB National Library Service. She is interested in all aspects of social media and uses Twitter to keep up to date with developments in the fields of librarianship, cataloguing and sight loss. She has contributed content for the CIG blog and RNIB's twitter account @RNIBread.

*What is a CIG e-forum?*
A CIG e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's *free*.

*To register:*
Instructions for registration are available at http://bit.ly/CIGEforum. Once you have registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you choose to leave the email list. Participation is free and open to anyone.
