Jointly Funded Doctoral Research Studentship:
Glasgow Caledonian University & University of Gloucestershire
RESEARCH TOPIC: 'Seeing the Blossom': Original Manuscript Research within the Dennis Potter Archive, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
Project Reference Number (GCU): 03/05/5
Applications are invited for a fully funded three year full-time doctoral research studentship (£14,600 pa plus payment of tuition fees) to conduct ground-breaking research into the work of Britain's pre-eminent television writer, Dennis Potter: author of many of the most critically acclaimed dramas in British television history, including Pennies from Heaven (BBC TV, 1978) and The Singing Detective (BBC TV 1986).
In 2011, the Forest of Dean community successfully gained Heritage Lottery funding to purchase the late Dennis Potter's personal archive from his Estate. Housed within a dedicated Heritage Centre in the Forest, the archive holds unpublished screenplays by Potter for both TV and film, handwritten script drafts and a range of other rare and valuable documents.
This joint PhD collaboration between Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Gloucestershire offers an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified candidate to conduct original research in this archive. The student will first spend a period of time in Glasgow being trained in 'Dennis Potter Studies' by a leading expert in this field (Professor John Cook of GCU). Then s/he will spend an agreed period of secondment at the University of Gloucestershire conducting intensive research at the nearby archive housed within the Dean Heritage Museum, prior to writing up the results of their investigations.
The studentship will be jointly supervised by Professor John Cook (Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland) and Dr. Joanne Garde-Hansen (University of Gloucestershire). It is anticipated that the position will commence in October 2012. During the course of their studies, applicants must be prepared to spend agreed periods of time at GCU's campus in Glasgow, Scotland and the University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham, England.
The supervisory team would welcome applications from individuals who have the following qualifications, interests or experiences:
· First or upper second class (or equivalent) degree in a related subject area (e.g. Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences) AND/OR
· Masters degree in a related area (e.g. media, creative arts, English studies, history, scriptwriting, archival or manuscript research)
· The applicant to have a demonstrable interest in the study of British television and film history and / or interest in the work of Dennis Potter.
Application procedure: All applicants should complete the GCU_PhD_Studentship_Application_Form<http://www.gcu.ac.uk/media/gcalwebv2/research/GCU%20Studentship%20Application%20Form.doc>.

Closing date: Friday 13th April 2012.
