Social Sciences Conference: Ways of Knowing, Ways of Learning

The theme for the inaugural HEA Social Sciences Conference is:

Social Sciences: Ways of Knowing, Ways of Learning

This conference will provide the opportunity for the Social Science Community to come together to address the concerns and issues being generated by current developments to teaching and learning in the HE sector. To respond to these changes, and to improve the student experience on offer, the community needs to have an understanding of what constitutes effective practice in the Social Sciences, in terms of the diverse ways in which our students learn and apply that learning within the context of their everyday lives.

Through providing a space in which to communicate insights and examples from practice of how we can embed innovative and effective opportunities for student initiative and engagement, the conference will provide an environment in which both challenges can be discussed and possible solutions shared.

Keynote speakers:

Professor Malcolm Tight, Professor in Higher Education, University of Lancaster

Professor Diana Laurillard, London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education


The HEA’s Social Science Cluster seeks to promote cross-disciplinary working between colleagues in the following disciplines: Anthropology, Business and Management; Economics; Education; Finance and Accounting; Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism; Law; Marketing; Politics; Sociology; and, Social Work and Social Policy.

We welcome contributions from all the cluster disciples around one of the following areas:

• Problem-based learning
• Simulations and games
• Technology-enhanced learning
• Inquiry-based learning
• Active learning
• Experiential learning
• Pre-placement and placement learning
• Work-based learning


The call for submissions is now open. The guidance document and form are available via the links on the right-hand side of this page.

Deadline extended - the call will now close at 12.00 noon on Tuesday 27 March 2012.

Conference Fee

For subscribing institutions: Full conference including conference dinner, overnight accommodation and breakfast £50

Colleagues from subscribing institutions may be eligible for support with the costs of travel via the HEA’s UK Travel Fund<http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/travel-fund>.

For non-subscribing institutions: Full conference including conference dinner, overnight accommodation and breakfast £250
