Dear Ken & the List,
Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I'll go to the Design Studies paper. I was, and am, particularly interested in research that has explored the readerships of design journals - specifically to what extent practicing industrial designers who are not involved in design education read scholarly design journals. Perhaps I need to be reading your paper before asking this question.
Anecdotally, while I was a practitioner it was more I.D magazine than Design Studies. The thesis: practicing designers have limited engagement with 'academic journals'.
Kind regards,
James Self.

Dear James,
This list did not originate with Marcio. This list appears in the study
that my colleagues and I published in 2008.
Friedman, Ken, Deirdre Barron, Silvana Ferlazzo, Tania Ivanka, Gavin
Melles, and Jeremy Yuille. 2008. Design Research Journal Ranking Study:
Preliminary Results. Melbourne, Australia: Swinburne University of
Technology Faculty of Design.
You can find the original study in full at:
http://hdl.handle.net/1959.3/45468
As first author of this study, however, I'd say it is now obsolete. It
was good at the time, but it is inadequate for research. Instead, I
suggest the far superior study led by Gerda Gemser from Delft University
of Technology together with Cees de Bont, Paul Hekkert, and myself.
Gemser, Gerda, Cees de Bont, Paul Hekkert, and Ken Friedman. 2012.
“Quality Perceptions of Design Journals: The Design Scholars’
Perspective.” Design Studies (2012).
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.destud.2011.09.001
The Design Studies article is a far better compilation and all journals
have been subject to evaluation by a broad group of global scholars. The
article contains both the grouping of leading journals and a list of the
40 top journals.
Best regards,
Ken Friedman
