Hello all. I work for Parks Canada and one technology that has piqued the
interest of some folks here is augmented reality. I have seen a number of
mobile apps that use AR (such as the Starbucks Christmas app where users
could interact with a 3D animation on a Starbucks cup; or London's
streetmuseum where users hold up the phone and see historic images of
London overlaid on modern London streets). I have also seen videos of
large- or medium-sized AR installations (such as National Geographic's
installation where users could interact with animals and an astronaut and
Disney's installation where users could interact with Goofy and other
characters on a large screen; or an installation where a user can choose
and "try on" various outfits to see how they would look on him/her.)
The location-based streetmuseum-type apps can be really interesting and
powerful. But the animated 3D apps I have seen seem somewhat gimmicky, and
even the installations I have seen seem cool but limited beyond that. Has
anyone seen any really innovative and effective museum or park or
educational augmented reality installations or mobile apps, especially 3D
animations? Does anyone have research related to the effectiveness of AR
for various target audiences?
Thank you!
Tamara
