As much as I hate Ubuntu Unity ( I agree with most of the opinions
expressed here and ccp4bb) I will grin and bear it because of how
much easier it has made life with Linux.
I will try the workarounds you talked about.
Along these lines Gnome3 also seems to have similar issues and then
there is OSX Lion...I guess the new usability mantra is have stuff fly
all over the place and appear and disappear in graphics card intensive
and "intuitive" ways ..such is progress!
