I like the idea of significant 19thc journals. I would have to add: Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion and its predecessor, Y Cymmrodor. Being the current editor of THSC has nothing to do with it of course....

Candidates: Y Traethodydd; Y Llenor or, in English, Owen M. Edwards's Wales? Or Cymru Fydd as a bilingual example?

There may well be other aspirants.

Best wishes,

Dear List

I am thinking of making the bold claim that Amy Dillwyn's novel, The Rebecca Rioter (1880), is the most important Welsh novel in the English language of the nineteenth century, possibly even the most important work of Anglophone Welsh literature of its era. But before I announce this 'fact' I wonder what other texts people might hurl at me in contestation of this claim?

Meanwhile, this subject has now got me thinking more widely about what we might rate as the most important (I'm deliberately avoiding the term 'great') nineteenth century texts in both languages?

Most important Welsh-language novel? Something by Daniel Owen?
Welsh-language poetry?
English-language poetry?

And what about important nineteenth century works of history, or science (perhaps this might be De La Beche's geological surveys)?

I'd be interested in your views, on or off-list, on nineteenth-century Anglophone novels in particular, but all of these other categories too.

Best wishes
Kirsti
