Dear all,
Thanks to everyone who has added their indignation and good humour to the discussion.
At the UKRC we have profiles of many, many women at all career stages, across all STEM areas and all - now I think about it - fully clothed. Even the scientist who worked on phosphoresence in the sea. (See for instance our guest bloggers: http://www.theukrc.org/blogs/getset-women ).
With consent from Rebecca and Adam Smith we have put out a short news release on our home page, highlighting the photos, the alternatives, and the lively discussion on psci-com:
http://www.theukrc.org/news/2012/02/under-dressed-female-scientists-stock-photos-show-warped-portrayal-of-women-in-stem
Best wishes,
Ruth

The IET have recently decided to stop using stock images at all - from now on, my understanding is that all IET literature images will be of actual IET members!
