The STOR-i Doctoral Training Centre is pleased to announce a STOR-i Masterclass at Lancaster University with Professor David Ryan from the University of Auckland with places available for UK-based PhD students.
For the continuing development of STOR-i students' research knowledge we hold a number of STOR-i masterclasses every year, typically given by visiting international experts in areas of statistics/OR. For more information about STOR-i masterclasses, please visit our website http://www.stor-i.lancs.ac.uk/training/events/masterclasses.
On Friday 30th March, Professor David Ryan will give a masterclass entitled Set Partitioning Problems with abstract below:
The set partitioning optimization model (and its related set packing and set covering models) occur frequently in real world resource scheduling applications. In some cases these problems are very difficult to solve but in other situations the problems are relatively easy to solve. In this course we will first consider some practical applications that give rise to SPP models. We will then discuss mathematical properties of the models which explain why some models are very easy to solve and we will develop special optimization techniques which are specifically designed to generate solutions in an efficient manner. We will illustrate the power of these methods using some numerical examples.
Learning Outcomes
* Recognise practical applications where set partitioning, covering or packing could be applied and what potential benefits might arise from solutions.
* Understand the mathematical properties of these models and when they are likely to be easy or hard to solve.
* Be familiar with solution methodologies including column generation and constraint branching.
As part of our commitment to training we are pleased to offer a limited number of masterclass places to PhD students from UK universities. We also have funding available to cover travel costs for a limited number of UK-based PhD students. To support a case for funding we require the title of your PhD, host institution/department/supervisor and a short statement (1/2 page maximum) outlining why attending the masterclass would be beneficial to your studies.
If you would like to request a place on the STOR-i masterclass, please send an email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> before 12pm on Wednesday 21st March containing:
- Your name;
- Institution of study;
- Title of your PhD;
- If you wish to apply for funding to cover travel costs, please also provide the details outlined above.
We will inform you by the 22nd March whether you have secured a place on the masterclass.
For details of further masterclasses which may be of interest to PhD students please see the STOR-i website: http://www.stor-i.lancs.ac.uk/training/events/masterclasses.
Best wishes,
Jonathan Tawn
