Evening All
Interesting discussion about latex and its safety merits. However, we in the South side of the Big Smoke are being asked to remove latex from all areas and where we essentially need to use it, we have to have a justification process in place.
The HSE are currently going round most of our Trusts in the sector (now and imminently) and we are now only really allowing latex in theatres (surgeons only), endoscopy, interventional radiology/cardiology, for nitrile allergy affected folks and one or two specialities where highly dextrous techniques are used.
For those going to be visited by the HSE, a key part is proving that you are doing surveillance and skin checks - they aren't just looking at latex use in trusts, but dermatitis and its control, risk assessments, monitoring and management procedures. For those doing the OH level checks, ensuring that they are 'competent' in accordance with the 2008 skin Inspection Tool kit and that you are working within MS24.
We are looking at Medline gloves and Schottland gloves, but if anyone can recommend a really good latex free sterile glove, please feel free to let me know.
Thanx
Iain
