Oh what a can of worms
Dyslexia would be something that would be regarded as a disability under
the EqA. Management need to be aware of this - they also need to be
aware that they are obliged to consider "reasonable adjustment"
Is dyslexia an OH issue? I believe that one could be argued back and
forth for hours
If the individuals are illiterate - is this an OH issue?
How would OH assess any of this in a meaningful way?
Suggest that this may well have the capacity to really really upset the
unions. Suggest that management may like to have some open dialogue with
them, discuss what they are going to do and how. This may ultimately
come down to a performance issue - and that isnt for OH to be dealing
with. I do think that HR should be taking the lead
I think what the company need to do is work out what they have. If they
contact local adult education college they may be able to advise on
basic literacy testing, suggest that this is done as a start. They may
even be able to get someone in with an education background to advise
If they contact dyslexia society there are some free screening tools,
but have to say that I would be loathe to do this under the remit of OH

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] CAPABILITY/LEARNING DIFFICULTY
Good afternoon
One factory I cover is currently undergoing huge changes. Some of the
employees have worked at the factory for over 30 years and have only
been required to do mundane tasks such as filling up crates and pushing
them to other areas. Now all staff will need to rotate and be able to
undertake all tasks. One to ones have commenced with HR and managment
and it has been noted that some staff are not capable of even writing
their names and cannot read. It is not clear if this is due to
intelligance or dyslexia as they have never been tested. Can anyone
advise me how in my capacity of OH I can help. This is a particularly
difficult site just a few months ago I came accross a gentleman at
screening who was deaf and could not speak. He had been employed at the
site for 30 years. I got Acess to work involved and now he can have a
signer 3hrs per week and he has said it has made such a difference as he
can now communicate properly! Any comment gratefully appreciated as
always.
