I am a midwife and PhD student at the University of Huddersfield and would like to request a little help with my research.
I am currently carrying out a narrative study exploring young mothers' experiences of relationship abuse. For this I am interviewing young women who became pregnant before their eighteenth birthday, are currently pregnant or have a child under 2 and have disclosed some form of relationship abuse from a partner, ex or the baby's father in the last year. Due to the sensitive nature of the research and the potentially vulnerability of participants I have developed an extensive ethical and safety protocol. The research has ethical approval from both the University of Huddersfield and the NHS Research Ethics Committee.
I am currently recruiting participants for the research through midwives, family nurses and specialist support workers who work with young mothers who may be experiencing relationship abuse. The professionals provide potential participants with basic information about the study and then put them in contact with me if they are interested in finding out more.
Given the nature of the research I had anticipated experiencing difficulties with recruitment, however it is proving even harder than I had expected and given the time constraints of my PhD I am looking to widen the area from which I am recruiting. I am therefore asking if anyone knows of any specialist services/professionals that provide care for young mothers and/or women experiencing relationship abuse that may be able to assist me. Obviously if they are NHS services I will need to obtain the necessary R&D approvals before I can begin recruitment, however before embarking on this it is useful for me to have knowledge of the service/professionals and the operational practices so that I can ensure my study will not create additional workload for any professionals assisting me. If you would like any further information about the research I would be more than happy to provide copies of the research protocol and information leaflets for participants and practitioners.
Many thanks,
Julia
